Dear Brent,

It sounds like you’re establishing a very successful insurance practice. I’m delighted to try to advise you, almost 30 years into my insurance career.

From your writing I sense your drive and determination. Along with your mentors, you’ve created a fertile environment for success. Types like us also tend to be “drivers” and very self-determined. These traits will create a successful career for you. But you must keep them in check.

Do drive yourself. As much as you know you will create a great business with a comfortable, secure lifestyle, you must also know when you should take a break. No one is a machine. If you treat yourself like one, you will “blow a cog.” Don’t do that. We Type A, “driver” personalities like to keep pushing. You must drive yet go easy on yourself if you still want to enjoy your practice at my age. (I’m almost 63, feel great, and derive more and more pleasure and gratification from my work every year.)

I believe you already know the difference between busywork and revenue-producing work. Sometimes you must do busywork to create revenue-producing work. The best advice I can give you is to remain focused. Prioritize. Have confidence in yourself and trust your common sense. You will discover how to balance busywork and revenue-producing work. It sounds like you’re doing the right things. I think each practice has its own ways of dealing with busywork. Some solo practices, like mine, have outside help to assist, but I still do quite a bit of admin work; it just “comes with the territory.” I hope this helps.
