Vanguard Charitable has published a new edition of its ongoing Why Giving Matters research series, drawing on more than a decade’s worth of insight from tens of thousands of donor-advised fund accounts to assess key trends in philanthropic activity.
The research highlights a significant degree of commitment from DAF owners, according to Ann Gill, Vanguard Charitable’s chief philanthropic officer, as well as a range of charities receiving support at a time of significant need.
“We’re attuned to the funding challenges nonprofits face, particularly attracting sustainable streams of income to support their missions and move them forward,” Gill said. “Our donors demonstrate their commitment to helping charities overcome this hurdle by making recurring gifts with their donor-advised fund, which allows nonprofits to operate today and plan for tomorrow.”
Recurring grants are the type of giving that nonprofits favor, according to the report, with three of four surveyed charities stating they prefer repeated gifts over a one-time gift for the same total. And DAF owners seem to be heeding the call, with many donors making both repeated gifts and more responsive donations as the need arises.
The flexibility of giving from DAFs supports more reliable funding for nonprofits, the report found. At the same time, DAFs also present an opportunity for advisors to engage in multi-generational planning with their clients — using discussions about charitable goals as a pathway toward more holistic advice.
The accompanying slideshow presents six insights into the growing generosity and engagement of DAF owners.
