Three-quarters of Americans say they want to stay in their homes and communities as they grow older rather than move to assisted living or retirement facilities, Seniorly reported recently.

This aging-in-place trend is likely to continue, the report said, as the number of people 65 and older is projected to grow from 63.3 million in 2025 to 82.1 million by 2050, a 26% surge.

The report noted that where seniors live matters considerably. The best states for aging in place make it easier to get around, stay healthy and feel supported. Those less conducive to the trend lag behind in such areas as health care access, home care services and community resources.

To determine the best states for aging in place in 2025, Seniorly researchers examined the most recent data across 10 categories: seniors’ risk of isolation, home health care quality, home health aide availability, emergency care timeliness, smart home adoption, housing costs, road safety, local walkability, food delivery access and weather hazards.

See the accompanying gallery for the 10 best states for aging in place, according to Seniorly.
