Wealth management merger-and-acquisition volume hit a record high of 366 transactions in 2024, with average assets per transaction of $1.4 billion, according to research from Echelon Partners.

RIAs were the most active acquirers last year, seeking to realize efficiencies, enter new markets or introduce service offerings. These strategic buyers’ acquisitions accounted for 71.6% of total deals in 2024.

RIA firms were backed by financial sponsors to help provide capital and resources needed to facilitate these transactions. Private equity firms were involved directly or indirectly in 71% of all disclosed transactions in wealth management M&A, up from 62% in 2023.
