Meningitis is not ‘a gay disease’

Following the death of a gay lawyer from Los Angeles and similar cases in New York City's gay community, some are drawing the conclusion that bacterial meningitis is a disease that is more prevalent among homosexuals. That is not the case. The disease — which spreads very much like the flu — is an equal opportunity killer. Hollywood City Councilman John Duran held a press conference facilitated by the AIDS foundation to dispel any conclusions being drawn by the public that this is a problem only for the gay community.
