Guardian Life Insurance Company today celebrated the opening of a new office in Holmdel, New Jersey, at the old Bell Laboratories site.

Guardian, which is based in New York, has leased 90,000 square feet at the complex and is planning to move about 300 employees into the space in the newly renovated “Bell Works” complex. Many will work at a Guardian technology hub.

The famous architect Eero Saarinen designed the historic building. AT&T’s Bell Labs had about 6,000 people working there from 1962 to 2007. The scientists, engineers and technologists  there helped develop the technology that made modern telecommunications and computers possible, and they also helped establish important new fields of basic science, such as radio astronomy.

Somerset Development has been renovating the complex, with the goal of attracting retail shops, restaurants, health care facilities, and lodging providers as well as offices.

Guardian, a life insurer founded in 1860, has a total of about 9,000 employees and 2,750 affiliated financial representatives located around the world.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article described the nature of the employees moving to the Bell Works complex incorrectly. There will be a mix of tech workers and other workers.
