Lawmakers were up in arms Thursday over the confirmation of Rep. Mick Mulvaney, R-S.C., as the new director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Rep. John Yarmuth, D-Ky., ranking member of the House Budget Committee, noted that OMBplays a vital role in addressing the budget opportunities and challenges facing our nation,” and urged him to uphold President Donald Trump’s pledge to protect Social Security and Medicare

“These programs are the only source of health and economic security for millions of Americans, so I hope to work with the new director to see that this pledge by the president is actually honored,” Yarmuth said in a statement.

As Congress awaits Trump’s first budget proposal, Yarmuth added, “the American people should be deeply concerned by the president’s plan to give massive tax cuts to the wealthy, which will explode the deficit and dramatically weaken our nation’s financial status.”

Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., who voted against Mulvaney, noted in a statement after his Thursday confirmation that Mulvaney’s “extreme record in the House of Representatives makes him a concerning choice” as the next OMB head.

Mulvaney, she said, has “consistently advocated for cutting Social Security, raising the retirement age and ending Medicare as we know it. He has even called Social Security a ‘Ponzi scheme!’”
