A unit of Magellan Health Services Inc. is part of a team setting up “integrated health homes” for Iowa residents with serious mental illness.

A “medical home” is a strategy for putting a primary care provider or other care provider in charge of managing and coordinating a patient’s care, rather than depending on the patient, an insurer or a care coordination firm to manage care. Advocates say a medical home can help lead to “whole patient care,” rather than fragmented care that addresses just one symptom or condition at a time.

Magellan, Avon, Conn. (Nasdaq:MGLN), says its Magellan Behavioral Care of Iowa affiliate will be working with the Iowa Medicaid program, four Iowa mental health centers, and federal medical clinics to create health homes for Iowa residents who have serious mental health conditions and are eligible for Medicaid.

For participants in the Iowa program, behavioral health providers will be in charge of the health homes, Magellan says.

The program will include treatment guidelines designed for people who have both serious mental illness and medical conditions.
