A southeastern-based insurer is donating funds to assist the International Red Cross with disaster relief efforts following the 8.9-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Japan on Friday.

American Family Life Insurance of Columbus (AFLAC), Columbus, Ga., says it has pledged 100 million yen to the International Red Cross to assist with their disaster relief efforts in Japan.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Japanese people during this very difficult time,” says Aflac Chairman and CEO Dan Amos. “We stand ready to assist in the healing process and are pledging these funds to ensure that basic needs are cared for during this crisis.”

Aflac says it will work with the International Red Cross to expedite this contribution.

Aflac is provider of guaranteed-renewable insurance in Japan.
