NAVA, Inc. Appoints Catherine J. Weatherford President and CEO

NAVA, Inc., the Association for Insured Retirement Solutions, Reston, Va., has announced that it has appointed Catherine J. Weatherford president and chief executive officer, effective September 3. Ms Weatherford replaces Mark Mackey, who announced his resignation as NAVA’s president and CEO in January of this year. Mr. Mackey will remain with the organization in the short term to assist in the transition.

Ms. Weatherford previously served as executive vice president and CEO of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), a position she held for 12 years. She has more than 31 years of experience in insurance regulation, government and public policy.

“The search for NAVA’s new CEO was an exhaustive, collaborative effort, and the board’s executive committee considered a large pool of candidates in order to identify the most qualified individual,” said Clifford Jack, chairman of NAVA. “Cathy emerged as the clear choice for a number of reasons. During her 12-year tenure as CEO of the NAIC, Cathy helped unite the group’s members into one voice and bring the association to the forefront of insurance regulation issues. I am confident in her ability to achieve the same level of success at NAVA while maintaining the organization’s progress on key technology, regulatory and trade group partnership initiatives.”

As executive vice president and CEO of the NAIC, Ms. Weatherford helped the 56-member organization fulfill its mission of assisting state insurance regulators in serving the public interest and establishing more effective and efficient financial regulatory oversight practices.

“I am proud of the accomplishments NAIC members made during my tenure, and the experience and insights I gained there will serve me well in my new role with NAVA,” said Ms. Weatherford. “I have long admired NAVA as an innovative and member-focused organization, and I have been impressed with the progress the group has made in broadening the relevance of annuities to a larger set of investors. I look forward to building upon NAVA’s success and I am grateful for the opportunity to play a role in the future direction of the organization.”

Prior to joining the NAIC in 1996, Ms. Weatherford served as regional manager for public affairs for Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, where she made significant progress on workers compensation reform and anti-fraud issues. Ms. Weatherford joined the Oklahoma Department of Insurance in 1977 and was appointed state insurance commissioner in 1991. She served a four-year term, during which she oversaw the department’s accreditation process and established a regulation system for long-term care insurance in the state. Ms. Weatherford holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Central Oklahoma.
