Plan Lets Holders Buy More Coverage When They Get Sick

American Community Mutual Insurance Company is expanding use of an unusual approach to designing health insurance policies.

American Community, Livonia, Mich., is introducing the Coverage on Demand preferred provider organization plan program in Michigan, Missouri and Ohio.

The program, similar to a program a company subsidiary has been selling in Texas, permits individuals and families to buy health insurance benefits with an annual maximum of $5,000, $15,000 or $30,000, or a $5 million lifetime maximum.

Insureds who need more coverage can buy more, even after a medical event, American Community says.

American Community will waive plan deductibles for insureds who seek preventive care or need care after experiencing accidents.

Customers must pay extra for maternity benefits and dental coverage.
