The Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education has given one $5,000 education grant to Brijna Canter and a second $5,000 grant to Zachary Cyran.

LIFE, Arlington, Va., awarded those grand prize scholarships along with 23 additional scholarships to students who submitted written essays or videos describing the effects of losing mothers or fathers at a young age.

The scholarship program received about 1,000 entries, LIFE says.

Canter, who attends the University of Central Florida, writes in her written essay about being evicted from 3 different homes after her father died suddenly at age 44.

Cyran, a student at Bowling Green State University, submitted a video describing what happened after his father died when he was 7, leaving just enough life insurance to pay for the funeral.
