Former President Bill Clinton, left, in an interview with Managing Director Frank LaSalla of Pershing at Pershing Insite.

Clinton Talks Bipartisanship in Conference Opener

Following a wide-ranging speech by Bill Clinton, Pershing Managing Director Frank LaSalla led a question and answer session with the former president in the kick-off keynote session at Pershing Insite. Responding to a question on how the nation could fix its fiscal woes, Clinton laid out a three-part plan. Our report on the session was one of eight articles on AdvisorOne published during the 14th annual Pershing  Financial Solutions Conference in south Florida.

Pershing CEO Brian Shea spoke at Pershing Insite 2012.

CEO Aims to Broaden Pershing's Global Reach

At a time when advisors are focused by necessity on the global markets and economy, Pershing CEO Brian Shea said in an interview during the Insite 2012 conference that advisors of both the RIA and broker-dealer persuasion could benefit from Pershing’s global footprint. “We execute, clear and report in 65 countries” around the world, Shea said. He further noted in an article based on that interview that Lockwood, part of Pershing’s Managed Account Solutions, is now working with BNY Mellon’s investment management unit to build separately managed accounts that invest globally.

Pershing Advisor Solutions CEO Mark Tibergien, lead columnist for Investment Advisor, spoke at Pershing Insite.

Tibergien: For Advisors, Future Growth Lies With Women and Younger Investors

In another interview, the CEO of Pershing Advisor Solutions, Mark Tibergien, spoke about the opportunities for advisors among women and younger investors. In a speech delivered to attendees and in the interview, Tibergien also urged advisors of all kinds to look ahead, determine where they wanted to be in 10 years' time, and take action now to make that future brighter.

Mr.Tibergien is the longtime lead columnist for Investment Advisor. Read his latest article, Growth and Austerity.

Jim Crowley, Chief Relationship Officer at Pershing, speaks at Pershing Insite 2012.

Pershing Reshuffles Leadership Duties

During the conference, Pershing announced a number of promotions and shifting of responsibilities among its key executives, most of whom have very long tenures at the company, such as Lucille Mayer, who is now co-chief information officer for Pershing. Among those with new titles are Jim Crowley, who in addition to overseeing the company’s clearing operations for U.S. independent broker-dealers is now also Pershing’s chief relationship officer.

In an interview during the conference, Crowley noted he will be overseeing Pershing’s BD relationship managers, who will follow his “Four Cs” of services: to be collaborative, consultative, consistent and comprehensive. How will he measure success of those relationship managers following these four principles? “By how much time we are spending side by side with our clients.”

Caroline O'Connell, chief strategy officer of Pershing, speaks at Pershing Insite 2012.

Another Pershing executive whose responsibilities have been expanded is Caroline O’Connell. In addition to her previous duties overseeing marketing and corporate communications, O’Connell is also now chief strategy officer for Pershing; she will be responsible for innovation strategies across the company.

O’Connell said that in addition to creating a global strategy, he responsibility will be to communicate “consistent messaging” across the company, to Pershing’s customers and the media, showing “how vast are the resources at Pershing,” including its growing collaboration with its parent company, BNY Mellon.

Editor's note: O'Connell's team was also responsible for creating the Insite 2012 conference mobile application, which other conference organizers should consider, in this editor's opinion, when building their own conference apps; it's the best such application I've seen.

Deepak Chopra spoke at the Pershing Insite 2012 on “The Soul of Leadership: Unlocking Your Potential for Greatness.” In his trademark approach of speaking directly to each person in the packed general session, we reported Chopra’s core message. “A true leader,” he said, “is the soul of a collective consciousness.” We are all storytellers of our hopes and wishes, heroic strivers of mythological dimensions. “A good story is the story of the hero’s quest, and a good story starts with a dream.”
