Stephen Oliner and J.D. Kleinke Join AEI
American Enterprise Institute (AEI) President Arthur Brooks announced Tuesday that Stephen Oliner and J.D. Kleinke have joined AEI to work on U.S. economic policy and health care policy, respectively.
Oliner has joined as a resident scholar after serving in a number of high-level positions during a 25-year career at the Federal Reserve, most recently as a senior adviser in the Division of Research and Statistics, where he was actively involved in the Fed's analysis of the U.S. economy and financial markets.
An expert on health care business strategy and entrepreneurship, resident fellow J.D. Kleinke was instrumental in the creation of four health care information organizations and has also advised established and startup companies on health care business, product and technology strategy.
Joan Bozek Named SVP of Prudential Retirement’s Investment Products Team
Prudential Retirement, a business unit of Prudential Financial, Inc., announced Monday the appointment of Joan Bozek as senior vice president, investment products, effective immediately. In this new position, Bozek will report to Jamie Kalamarides, senior vice president, institutional investment solutions. Prior to this, Bozek served as vice president, defined benefit product, service and operations.
Prior to joining Prudential, she served as CIO for The Merrill Lynch Retirement Group with responsibility for defined benefit and defined contribution plan investments. Before that, she was chief risk officer and head of investment product for Merrill Lynch Trust Company, where she pioneered its open architecture investment platform.
Putnam Investments Expands Retirement Sales Team
Putnam Investments announced Jan. 25 that Steven McKay and Joseph Kaplan have joined the firm. McKay and Kaplan will be based in Boston and New York City, respectively, and report directly to James Brockelman, national sales manager, advisor-sold defined contribution.
McKay comes from Hartford Retirement Services, and will serve as regional 401(k) sales director for New England and upstate New York. He replaces Meredith Wolff, recently promoted to 401(k) national accounts manager.
Kaplan, previously with ADP Retirement Services, is regional 401(k) sales director for New York City and surrounding areas, as well as New Jersey, and fills a newly created territory.

Puerto Rico Benefits Attorney, Juan Luis Alonso, Joins Groom Law Group
Groom Law Group, Chartered, a Washington-based law firm focusing exclusively on employee benefits law, announced Monday that Juan Luis Alonso has joined the firm. Alonso has broad-based expertise in Puerto Rico employee benefits matters, and will continue to be actively involved with Puerto Rico legislative and regulatory officials when working from the firm's D.C. office.
Previously, Alonso spent over a decade at McConnell Valdes LLC inPuerto Rico, most recently serving as chair of the employee benefits team. He has an extensive background in the design and qualification of Puerto Rico and U.S. qualified and nonqualified retirement plans, ERISA litigation support, and Puerto Rico, U.S. tax code and ERISA compliance, including fiduciary issues. Also a CPA, Alonso worked for a Big 4 accounting firm for three years as a tax consultant before joining McConnell Valdes.
FinaMetrica Announces U.S. Appointments
FinaMetrica has appointed two new business development consultants for the U.S.: Tyler Nunnally, founder and CEO of Upside RISK, and Robert Roche, founder of APL Consulting Services.
Behavioral finance specialist Nunnally, based in Atlanta, will serve the Eastern and Central time zones. Prior to Upside RISK, Nunnally was with Oxford Risk Research and Analysis, Ltd., a spin-off consultancy of Oxford University, formed to bring behavioral economics and risk behavior academic research to the corporate environment.
Roche, based in Laguna Beach, will serve Mountain and Pacific time zones. He provides institutional-level consulting services to SEC- and state-registered RIAs. He has also worked as a lead consultant for several banks, broker-dealers, TAMPs, and institutional asset managers, and served as CEO for a $2 billion RIA.
FRC Gains New Practice Leaders and Product Focus
With the recent acquisition by Asset International, Financial Research Corporation (FRC) announced Jan. 26 that as a division of Strategic Insight, it has significantly increased its research resources, leveraging more than 20 researchers, analysts, and writers across Strategic Insight and Asset International.
Research analysts leading practices include: Paul Curley, 529 practice; Bridget Bearden, lifecycle practice; Sonia Mata, alternatives practice; Lisa Campbell, editor-in-chief, FRC’s Monitor; and Kevin Ng, SVP of retirement and sub-advisory, sub-advisory practice.
Tuition Plan Consortium Appoints Abigail Peche
The Tuition Plan Consortium, a group of more than 270 U.S. private colleges and universities that own and operate the Private College 529 Plan, announced on Jan. 25 the appointment of Abigail Peche to director of member relations and communications. In addition to building and fostering relationships with member colleges and universities and guiding the organization’s communications strategy, she will focus on bolstering its social media presence and engagement.
Peche previously served as the marketing communications manager for Pi Beta Phi Foundation, the nonprofit entity of the women’s fraternity Pi Beta Phi, where she implemented a social media plan, launched their mobile App, led their website redesign and created all branding and marketing materials. Prior to that, she was director of communications for the Augustinians of Villanova, where she developed and launched three websites, implemented digital marketing tactics and produced all print publications for the Province and their missions in Peru, Africa and Japan.
United Capital Announces Addition of Harold C. Brown & Co.
United Capital Financial Advisers announced on Jan. 27 the addition of a partnership team from Harold C. Brown & Co. Three partners at Harold C. Brown & Co., an 80-year-old firm in western New York, will join United Capital as managing directors. Peter Grogan, Will Kelly, Mimi Schanzlin and their team will become United’s anchor office in Buffalo, N.Y., and will operate under the United Capital name.
The team at Harold C. Brown & Co. is bringing approximately $240 million in assets under advisement and roughly 350 family relationships to United Capital. Grogan, Kelly and Schanzlin, all CFPs, will be accompanied in the move by their client services team, which they expect to expand over the next year.
National Planning Corporation Adds Two New Recruiters
National Planning Corporation announced Jan. 26 the addition of two new full-time recruiters. Scott Montgomery and Keith Mistretta are now vice presidents of new business development, and will report to John Johnson, senior vice president.
Montgomery, based in San Diego, comes from FirstPoint Partners, a financial adviser consulting and recruiting firm, where he served as senior vice president of business development; he was also vice president of business development at LPL Financial, where he spent nine years. He has held external wholesaler positions at Mackenzie Asset Management in Boca Raton, Fla., and Munder Capital Management in Birmingham, Mich. Earlier, he served as a financial adviser with A.G. Edwards.
Mistretta, based in Durham, N.H., has more than 18 years of experience as a financial adviser, and 13 years as a recruiter for independent broker-dealers. Prior to joining, he served as senior vice president of business development for First Allied Securities, Inc. and regional vice president of branch office development for Securities America, Inc.
Cove Street Capital Appoints Greg Farber
Cove Street Capital announced it has hired Greg Farber as director of institutional marketing and client service, a new position for the firm, effective January 17. In this role, he will manage Cove Street’s institutional sales, marketing, consultant relations, and client service functions.
Prior to joining Cove Street, Farber, with more than 15 years of industry experience, was a managing director of business development for the Advisory Services Group at J.P. Morgan Securities. Previously, he held similar positions at Bear Stearns and Oppenheimer & Company, which he joined after beginning his career in financial services at A.G. Edwards & Sons.
JHS Adds Two Florida Advisors
JHS Capital Advisors announced Monday that financial advisors Jeffery Iseler and Tom Prendergast have joined its Tampa headquarters. Both serve clients in the Florida market.
Iseler came from Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, which he joined in 1999 and where he also served as a financial advisor.
Prendergast joined after working as a financial advisor at Oppenheimer & Co. He previously worked as a CPA for 14 years.
