HSBC Hires Global Macro Strategist

NEW YORK (HedgeWorld.com)--Gabriel Burstein joined HSBC Securities (USA) Inc. as a senior vice president and macro trading strategist, a new position at the company.

Mr. Burstein has spent most of his career as a global macro specialist but only now is getting to focus solely on global macro strategies as the investment philosophy comes back in vogue.

"The global macro strategy has never been so useful as it has been in the last 12 months," said Mr. Burstein. He added that demand will continue to increase in the next 12 months as other hedging strategies irrevocably become smaller due to current trends in the investment markets.

At HSBC Securities, Mr. Burstein will become part of the HSBC equity strategy team, which is headed by Jason James, head of global equity strategy at HSBC Bank plc. He will report to Mr. James and to Ulrik Trampe, managing director and head of equities at HSBC Securities.

Mr. Burstein will focus on long/short strategies and global macro equity trading opportunities and will be working with the hedge funds and other clients that buy equities from HSBC. Before joining HSBC, he worked as a global macro proprietary trader at Goldman Sachs and, most recently from 1996 until 1999, was an ex-macro trading strategies at Daiwa Europe where he led the specialized equity group.
