Step by Step

If you're wondering how to attract and hire young graduates of a university's financial planning program, Don Schreiber offers the following tips:

o Know what you are offering to a prospective employee. Have a strategic vision of what your company will look like in the future, and be able to articulate it. Have a clear, prepared idea of what the career opportunity will look like for the candidate in question. Have a reasonable, competitive compensation plan.

o Find a financial planning college program you respect, and get to know the program director and professors. Let them know how many students you are interested in hiring, and within what time frame.

o Build a presence on campus. Offer your services as a guest speaker to the school's student FPA chapter on a topic of interest to the chapter's members.

o Look for a candidate with a high GPA and varied work experience. A student with more experience will have a better idea of what she does and doesn't want in an employer.
